Binder free novel synthesis of structured hybrid mixed metal oxides (MMOs) for high temperature CO2 capture

Here we report a novel, binder free simple post synthesis modification of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) to develop structured CO2 capture sorbents. The method involves the LDHs with an organic modifier, melamine, create porosity and provide support for enhanced properties. modified were pelletized (2 mm) overcome particle size issues associated powder samples when used in relevant process, e.g. fixed bed reactors. played significant role creating providing mixed metal oxides (MMOs) pellets. capacity resultant hybrid pellets directly correlates amount modifier used. MMOs captured 1.34 mmol per g sorbent at 200 °C 1 bar, they significantly outperformed their unmodified counterparts (0.35 mmol/g) commercial (Pural MG70, SASOL) (0.33 mmol/g). They also showed excellent cycling behaviour over 20 carbonation/regeneration cycles. This novel shows promise LDH based sorbents that are suitable industrial scale applications.
